Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion sometimes known as mechanical exfoliation is a type of digital vacuum dermabrasion. Dermabrasion techniques are used to change the texture and appearance of the skin so as to minimise scars and reduce the appearance of sun damage. Microdermabrasion is a very gentle method of mechanical peeling using repetitive, very soft treatments to improve the skin quality. The skin becomes smooth, rejuvenated, its tone is improved, surface pigmentation and pores are softer. The microdermabrasion method is recommended as a part of preventive skin care. It is popular worldwide and is currently the third most popular cosmetic treatment after Botox® and collagen.

How does microdermabrasion work?
The microdermabrasion procedure uses a machine that could be described as a mini sand blaster for the skin. The machine bombards the skin with a continuous blast of very small abrasive aluminium oxide crystals. The crystals gradually wear away the top layers of skin (stratum corneum) removing imperfections and smoothing ths skin. The used crystals and dead skin are vacuumed up by the machine. This abrasive action also stimulates collagen to encourage the production of new cells and can also lift facial muscles making the skin look younger.

How many microdermabrasion treatments are required?
To achieve the best results for microdermabrasion 4 - 8 visits are required, sometimes more depending on the skin type and age.

What are the negative effects of microdermabrasion?
Another significant advantage of the microdermabrasion method is that after the microdermabrasion treatment the skin is only slightly red. There are no visible and disturbing marks or swellings present. It is possible to undergo the microdermabrasion treatment during your lunch break (it takes 45 minutes), the whole microdermabrasion procedure can be relaxing for some or some can feel a slight scratching sensation. There should be no pain associated with the microdermabrasion method, however you need to stay out of the sun during this course of microdermabrasion treatment and always wear sunscreen 30 plus.

What is the healing time after the microdermabrasion treatment?
The total healing time after microdermabrasion is 10 days. After the ten days the skin quality is very natural, smooth and sometimes slightly pink. The skin is also sensitive to sunlight so it is recommended to use sun protective creams with SPF 30 plus.

Microdermabrasion can’t reduce pore size, or tighten loose skin. The microdermabrasion procedure should be carried out by a qualified surgeon or dermatologist registered with the relevant national authority such as the Healthcare Commission.

There are a range of other skin treatments which can be as effective as microdermabrasion, such as chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing that can be used to reduce the appearance of acne or scarring
