It is often recommended that sclerotization occurs for patients with isolated locations of only the smallest of veins. After such an operation it is recommended to wear medical elastic tights over the treated areas.
It is possible to notice dark patterns in the area of the subtle veins. This pattern is caused by the pigmentation of pathological veins. The pattern will become highlightened after sclerotization however it will disappear after a short period of time (simultaneously with the healing abilities of the organism). In 5–10 % of cases, these pigmentations stay in the form of maps for a longer period, or even forever. Nevertheless, sclerotization is suitable for cosmetic reasons and as a prevention against further spreading of spider veins.
This treatment is generally performed for cosmetic reasons however in some countries such as Australia, the health care system will pay a part of the cost of this treatment.
Does Sclerotherapy hurt?
Some pain is associated with this treated, however generally it is mild. The needle used in sclerotherapy is very fine and therefore results in a barely perceptible pinprick sensation. Some patients may experience a slight burning sensation for a few seconds immediately after the injection. Swelling and bruising can occur for several days later. Generally a compression tights are worn for up to a week or two depending on the treatment situation. This treatment may needed to be repeated for best results.
What results can I expect from the Sclerotization treatment?
Most patients can expect about 80% improvement in treated veins.
